Guide to filing your tax return in Switzerland

Create the documentFiling a tax return in Switzerland is an annual obligation for resident taxpayers, except for most people taxed at source. The Swiss tax system stands out for its three-level structure: federal, cantonal and municipal. This means your tax burden depends heavily on where you live, with significant differences from one canton to another.
Filing deadlines vary by canton. In most of them, including Zurich, individuals must submit their tax return by 31 March of the following year at the latest; some cantons set a different date, such as Vaud (15 March). You can usually request an extension, in principle before the deadline expires. It is often free, but the length granted and any fees depend on the canton.
Tax deductions are an important way to reduce your tax burden. The main deductions include: pillar 3a contributions (max. CHF 7'258 in 2026 for people affiliated with a pension fund), professional expenses (travel between home and work, meals, continuing education), health insurance premiums (up to a flat-rate amount) and debt interest. Each canton sets its own tax scales and most of its deduction caps, which makes things complicated for taxpayers who move to another canton.
People taxed at source (mainly B and L permit holders) can request a subsequent ordinary assessment, for example to claim deductions, or challenge the amount withheld: since 2021, these requests must be submitted by 31 March of the following year at the latest, in all cantons. Residents taxed at source whose gross annual salary reaches CHF 120'000 are automatically subject to a subsequent ordinary assessment and must complete a tax return.
Most cantons offer software or an online service to complete your tax return and submit it electronically (for example VaudTax in the canton of Vaud or ZHprivateTax in Zurich): check your canton's tax administration website. If you move to another canton or municipality, SwissDoc helps you inform the tax administration in writing. Your first three documents are free, no credit card required.
